Janet Sands

Janet Dowling Sands has over 30 years of experience in the nonprofit world. As Director of the RORD Foundation, she provided funding and hands-on leadership for many science-based initiatives. Her volunteer career has been focused on education, science and nature. An award-winning Girl Scout Leader, she has also served on the Boards of Greenwich Academy and Cate School and since 1995 on the Board of the Institute of Human Origins at ASU. But Ms. Sands will readily describe her deep involvement and Board service at the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History as being the “most rewarding”, providing “incredible opportunities” to be connected with the Museum’s scientists, research, and public outreach. A highlight - helping to organize the Museum’s first two Symposia on Human Origins.

Ms. Sands holds a degree in Art History and Design from UC Berkeley. Her professional career has included work as an architectural designer and photographer; managing her family’s building materials business in Los Angeles; and three decades as a private investor.
