Classification

Scientific name: Necrophilus hydrophiloides Guerin-Meneville
Common name: The flat brown scavenger beetle
    Order Coleoptera
    Superfamily Staphylinoidea
    Family Agyrtidae

Natural History: This beetle is considered a general scavenger. It is often found near rotting carcasses, mushrooms, and dung. It helps to recycle these materials back into the soil. They are mainly active in the wetter months of the year.
How to recognize:This species resembles many carrion beetles (Silphidae). It is about 8mm long, reddish brown, rounded and flattened. It has clubbed antennae and distinctly striated wing covers.
Origin: This species is native to California.
Legal protection: Not federally listed.
