13 through September 7 John and Peggy Maximus Gallery As the largest and most diverse group of insects, beetles have long been admired for their natural beauty- some even attaining status of sacred cultural icons. Conversely, some species have been scorned as scourges upon humanity. However we perceive them, beetles remain the single most successful group of creatures on earth. Unlike graceful butterflies,
with easily depicted conspicuous wings, the more covert and varied body
forms of beetles presented complex challenges to those attempting to describe
and illustrate them. As we observe them up close, their infinite variety
underscores the essential role beetles play in every ecosystem on earth.
