Cigarette butt illustrationVILLAIN: Cigarette Butts and Other Trashy Foes

Every day, astounding amounts of garbage pile up on the seafloor, drift with the ocean currents, and litter our beaches. This trash buildup greatly affects the health of the ocean and the creatures that live there. Birds, seals, sharks, fish, and turtles can get snagged in old fishing lines, or mistake garbage for food. This trash can lead to entanglement, choking, strangulation, or poisoning.

But where does it come from?!

Cigarette butts, plastic bags and bottles, marine debris and all sorts of litter from the land make their way to the ocean. Trash can travel far in rivers and storm drains.

FYI: MarBorg Industries recycles over 300,000,000 pounds of material per year. That’s equivalent to 20,000 trash truck loads every year that do not go to the landfill – that’s enough trash trucks to fill the highway bumper to bumper from Santa Barbara to Los Angeles!
