| ENGROSSING
EDUCATION
Sometimes a dose of fun grossness helps science make sense! Try some of these fun home activities or schedule a group field trip to the Museum for
fun and engrossing education.
1) Download this bone
chart and investigate an owl pellet. You
can buy an owl pellet kit in the Museum Store. What is an
owl
pellet?
2) Try this fun take-home activity and make your own “SNOT”
(a.k.a. GLARCH). Also buy the book Hands-On
Grossology
by Sylvia Branzei in the Museum Store for more engrossing
activities.
Ingredients & Materials:
White glue (Elmer’s® School Glue works best)
Liquid starch (Sta Flo® is a common brand)
Food coloring (green and yellow are great snot colors!)
Measuring cups
Plastic resealable bag
Directions:
This snot is not edible - so do not eat it! Also, it can get messy
so try not to get it on your clothes.
Measure ½ cup of white glue and pour into the plastic bag.
Add ¼ cup of liquid starch and a few drops of food coloring
(if you want) into
the same bag.
Seal the bag and knead the mixture together until it looks solid
After 10 minutes of kneading, if the mixtures looks too stringy
add some
starch. If it looks too wet add some glue.
3) Schedule a field trip to the Museum to see GROSSOLOGY™
before it leaves California. The Santa Barbara Museum of Natural
History is the last Californiastop scheduled until through 2009.
For more information about the Museum’s School
Services Program or to schedule a field trip contact the School
Programs Registrar at 805-682-4711 ext. 165.
