Getting an Ear Full: The Story of the Blue Whale
Wednesday, November 20
Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History
Blue whales lay down a layer of wax in their ear canal each year allowing scientists to determine the whale's age just as you would with a tree that grows rings. Collecting this ear wax from whales that have died can shed light on how the animals lived and for how long. Join Associate Curator of Vertebrate Zoology and Marine Mammal Stranding Coordinator Michelle Berman Kowalewski on a journey back in time as told through the ear wax of a blue whale.
Members $8; Non-Members $10
