The Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History is proud to premiere The Lone Woman of San Nicolas Island, a new documentary by filmmaker Paul Goldsmith. This film, inspired by the acclaimed novel by Scott O'Dell, Island of the Blue Dolphins, is based on the true story of Juana Maria, a Native American woman who was left alone for 18 years on San Nicolas Island during the 19th century. This documentary will bring us on a journey to San Nicolas Island to visit Juana's campsite and the cave in which she inhabited during the years of her isolation giving us insight into Juana's life on San Nicolas. After the screening, engage in a discussion with expert panel that includes an archeologist, scientist, historian, and Chumash elder about the film and book.
