What Moth is this?

This moth was on our patio floor and was franticly spinning around and around.

Curator Response

Hi Ronald,

This is a Polyphemus moth, Antheraea polyphemus, one of the largest moths in California! The larvae feed on a variety of plants, but especially oak, and the moths are commonly attracted to lights at night.

Sincerely,

Schlinger Chair and Curator of Entomology Alex Harman, Ph.D.
