Small fly?
Hello!
Can you tell what this is that is sitting on the blue-eyed grass?
Thanks!
Curator Response
Hi Kevin,
This is a Margined Calligrapher, Toxomerus marginatus, a common species of hover fly. The adults are pollinators, while the larvae feed on thrips, aphids, and other small insects. A great species to have in your backyard!
Sincerely,
Schlinger Chair of Entomology Alex Harman, Ph.D.
