The Collectors: A Life in Lepidoptera

April 24 through September 7, 2026

Lepidoptera—butterflies and moths—have long been objects of study and delight. Learn about the lives of passionate collectors of these charismatic insects, from the eighteenth century to the modern day.

The antique engravings on display date from a time when naturalists first began to identify and classify insects as a serious object of study. They were authored primarily by trained artists who became interested in moths and butterflies, raised them through metamorphosis, and recorded observations in word and image. These works published in early entomological literature display the wonderful diversity and physical forms of lepidopteran species.

The Collectors runs Friday, April 24 through September 7, 2026.
