J.P. Harrington in American Archaeology, 1905–1915

Most people interested in California’s Indigenous cultures are very aware of John Peabody Harrington’s important ethnographic and linguistic research with Chumash and other Native groups along the Central California coast. In this free public lecture presented by the Santa Barbara County Archaeological Society, California State University, Northridge Professor of Anthropology James E. Snead, Ph.D., will shed light on Harrington’s career in the American Southwest prior to his concentration on California Indian studies. Dr. Snead will show how Harrington’s research reflects the ways archaeology and anthropology were practiced in the early twentieth century.
