Curated: Orchids and Their Care

At Zoom

May 15, 2021 / 11:00 AM–12:00 PM

Learn about the care and science of your favorite flowers with orchid experts George Hatfield and Curator of Malacology Daniel L. Geiger, Ph.D. Although orchids have a reputation as fussy plants, many live as epiphytes (plants that grow on top of other plants), making them hardier than one might think! Yet it’s important to understand these plants to successfully grow them. Whether you’re new to orchids or an advanced grower, this online workshop with live Q&A will expand your expertise and confidence.

Hatfield, a globally-recognized master of the craft of breeding and maintaining showy Cymbidium plants, will teach you about their care, including the division of orchids, a vital, yet easy, task important to the long-term health of these plants. Watch this practice in action with the Cymbidium plants that make their home in the Museum’s historic courtyard. Then Dr. Geiger will offer a rare view of the Museum’s scanning electron microscope room, where he dives deep into research probing the secrets of microorchids.

Multiple ticket levels are available for this online program, from watch-only links to a great opportunity to add to your orchid collection. A limited number of tickets are available at each level (especially the most advanced): be sure to get yours before it sells out!
