Never-Before-Seen: Details of an Early Universe

At Campbell Hall | UCSB

November 14, 2022 / 4:00 PM–5:30 PM

UCSB Global Engagement and the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History are pleased to welcome the public to a riveting multi-media presentation by NASA scientist Dr. Matthew Greenhouse on the James Webb Space Telescope.

The free event kicks off UCSB’s celebration of International Education Week, a joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education.

The James Webb Space Telescope was launched on December 25, 2021, having been developed by NASA in partnership with the European and Canadian Space Agencies. It is the largest space telescope ever constructed, and will extend humanity’s view of the universe into the infrared spectrum thus revealing how our galaxies and structure have evolved over cosmic time. It will also search exoplanet atmospheres for evidence of life.

Dr. Matthew Greenhouse is Project Scientist for the Webb science instrument payload. He has served on several NASA and European Space Agency (ESA) flight mission teams, and is a member of the NASA Astrophysics Working Group. He supports ground-based astronomy in many ways, including with the National Science Foundation Committee of Visitors. He is the recipient of more than 20 individual performance awards such as the NASA Exceptional Achievement Medal and the Robert H. Goddard award for Exceptional Achievement in Science.

Dr. Greenhouse will describe the James Webb Space Telescope project, findings so far, as well as possible future work to be undertaken by the project team.
