Interpreting Hawaiian Petroglyphs and Pictographs

The Hawaiian Islands possess a variety of rock art sites. In this free public lecture presented by the Santa Barbara County Archaeological Society, Steven James, Ph.D., will report on his 50 years of experience examining and photographing these sites on five of the eight main islands. Dr. James will elaborate on elements characterizing different cultural periods and what can be inferred regarding the purpose of these sites based on ethnohistorical and archaeological evidence. He will also discuss problems in rock art site preservation.
