The Life & Legacy of Tom Dibblee

At the Museum | Fleischmann Auditorium

November 6, 2025 / 2:00 PM–3:00 PM

With an uncanny memory, sharp eye for patterns, and inexhaustible ability to traverse harsh terrain, field geologist and cartographer Thomas W. Dibblee, Jr. mapped more than a quarter of California.

Dibblee Curator of Earth Science Jonathan Hoffman, Ph.D., of the Museum’s Dibblee Geology Center will present Tom's achievements, revealing how this iconic geologist made so many notable contributions to geologic research. Dr. Hoffman will share personal items from the Dibblee archives, such as Tom's first geologic map, made in high school and depicting the ranch where he grew up near Point Conception.

The Dibblee Geology Center at SBMNH is dedicated to advancing knowledge of the Earth through research, providing expert geologic advice to public and private interests, and advancing public education in geology.
