Science Pub: Cyborg Jellies Exploring Our Oceans

At Dargan's Irish Pub & Restaurant, 18 E. Ortega Street

March 9, 2026 / 6:30 PM–8:00 PM

From shark tracking to oil spill mapping, marine research requires unique tools to gather data. In this free public talk, Caltech Ph.D. student Noa Yoder will introduce you to some robotic devices marine scientists use, notably including biohybrid robotic jellies that combine the natural efficiency of jelly swimming with robotic control for deep ocean sensing.

Yoder studies fluid dynamics and aeronautics at Caltech. Before beginning her Ph.D., she worked at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution developing autonomous underwater vehicles for ocean research.

No tickets or reservations needed, but note that Science Pub is a popular program. Early birds get good seats, order food and drink at leisure, and enjoy a raffle to support science education and win Museum swag. Arriving close to 6:30 may land you in an overflow room or without a seat.

This event is part of the Museum’s ongoing Science Pub series of free science talks held on the second Monday of every month. For more information about Science Pub, contact Kelsey Perry at kperry@sbnature2.org.
