General Relativity Beats the Heart of a Dying Star

Joseph Farah, a graduate student studying supernovae at Las Cumbres Observatory (LCO) and UCSB discusses his work unraveling the mysterious interaction between a newborn magnetar powering the brightest supernovae in the universe from within, and the massive debris disk swirling around it. This work, recently published in Nature, reveals how these forces shaped the explosion, revealing the complex gravity and extreme physics at work within a dying star for the first time.

Las Cumbres Observatory (LCO) is pleased to present a series of free public talks featuring leading scientists speaking about exciting new discoveries in astronomy.
