Simo’mo: The Story of a Chumash Village
At the Museum | Farrand Auditorium
From 2010 to 2023, The Moorpark College Archaeological Program undertook a limited archaeological survey and excavations at Simo’mo and another coastal Chumash village site near Point Mugu. Moorpark College Professor of Archaeology Andrew Kinkella, Ph.D., will discuss the implications of the research findings on the deep history of Simo’mo.
As part of a field methods class in archaeology, Moorpark students excavated several 1x1 meter testpits, implemented a site mapping project using GPS data coupled with Google Earth images and aerial photos, and analyzed artifacts in the lab. Researchers collected marine shell fragments specifically for dating purposes and have produced 45 new radiocarbon dates.
No tickets or reservations required, but it is recommended to arrive a little early to ensure a seat. For more information, contact sbcas@sbnature2.org.
