Inside our theater, the stars are always out!

Our expert Astronomy Programs presenters are ready to answer your questions during interactive live presentations. Get to know the stars of Santa Barbara, the universe, and the wonders of space.

Planetarium shows are included with admission. Listen for the announcement on the speaker system in our exhibit halls inviting you to line up in front of Space Sciences 5–10 minutes in advance of each show. First come, first served.

  • 11:00 AM – The Night Sky for Little Dippers
    (recommended for families with young children; 15 minutes)
    This 15-minute presentation is designed for young audiences and features different topics at every show. Come back again and again with your little one to build up their enthusiasm and excitement for space!

  • Noon – Edge of Darkness
    (recommended for ages 5 and up; 40 minutes)
    Edge of Darkness features amazing scenes of places never before seen, gathered by key space missions that culminated with groundbreaking discoveries. Experience a spectacular flight through the great cliffs on comet 67P, a close look at the fascinating bright "lights" on Ceres, and the first ever close-ups of dwarf binary planet Pluto and its moons. This presentation includes live Q&A with the presenter.

  • 1:00 PM – Santa's Starry Ride
    (recommended for all ages; 30 minutes)
    Join Santa as he flies around the globe to learn about constellations and stories people enjoy all over the world. You'll learn about the classical Greek constellations, see the aurora borealis from the North Pole, look at Polaris at the equator and learn about constellations you can only see in the southern hemisphere. You'll hear stories told in Iceland, Indonesia, New Zealand and more as you experience the night sky from Santa's sleigh!

  • 2:00 PM – Wonders of the Winter Sky
    (recommended for ages 5 and up; 40 minutes)
    Join us for a tour of tonight’s night sky. We’ll learn about the constellations and planets visible in Santa Barbara tonight, along with any upcoming astronomy events like meteor showers, comets, or eclipses. This presentation includes live Q&A with the presenter.

  • 3:00 PM – Cosmic Webb: The Universe as Never Seen Before
    (recommended for ages 8 and up; 40 minutes)
    The James Webb Space Telescope is expanding our understanding of the universe as it captures breathtaking new views of the cosmos. Learn why JWST is showing us more than ever before, and take an in-depth look at the latest image releases with our astronomy experts. This presentation includes live Q&A with the presenter.
