Science Pub From Home: Why History Needs Science

At Zoom

September 14, 2020 / 6:30 PM–7:30 PM

This event has reached capacity.

In this beautifully illustrated program, learn some surprising insights about California’s history and prehistory that provide us with a big-picture context, and help us understand how profoundly our Spanish missions symbolize global interactions that continue to this day, with considerable controversy. But the missions also remind us of how much scientific knowledge has advanced since they were built.

Janet Dowling Sands, author of the recently published book On a Mission: The Real Story of the California Missions, has developed a unique perspective on history, shaped by many years of engagement with science and scientists as a board member of both the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History and the Institute of Human Origins at Arizona State University, founded by Dr. Donald Johanson. She had a key role in organizing the 2009 and 2014 Santa Barbara Symposia on Human Origins. Born in California and a background in business, education, and philanthropy, Ms. Sands has had a life-long interest in the history and natural history of the West. She holds a degree in Art History from UC Berkeley and is past president of the Santa Barbara Corral of Westerners International.

Ms. Sands’ book is available through the Museum’s bookstore, both on campus and online.
